If you haven’t heard of Habitat for Humanity Restore, you are in for a great surprise. As one of the not-for-profit programs to support Habitat for Humanity, Restore takes new and used building materials and furniture and recycles those items to the public at discounted prices. Founded in 2000, Restore operates with one philosophy: “People, Planet and Profit.” As of December 2012, according to their website, they have generated more than $4 million for building homes in the urban core of Jackson County, Missouri. They have also diverted more than 25,000 tons of building materials from Kansas City waste. So, not only are the building for the needy, they are recycling for all of us!
“People seeking building supplies can find what they need at ReStore. ReStore seeks to be a good steward of natural resources and energy provided by our planet, Earth. Thousands of tons of useable building materials are diverted from landfills each year by our ReStore. Finally, ReStore profits are transferred to our Habitat for Humanity Kansas City affiliate to further its mission to give low income families decent, affordable homes to own. Through this Triple Bottom Line philosophy, the Habitat Kansas City ReStore has experienced phenomenal success and serves as a model of sustainability to the surrounding Kansas City metropolitan area.”
As a partner with Habitat Restore, Interior Surface donated 20 pallets of VCT and some rubber base last week to help further the efforts of the organization. It’s quite fitting that ISE’s new product will help to fund more housing for needy families in the KC Metro area.
“Vintage, revisited and revived for modern dwellings and public spaces – that’s the takeaway with American Heritage, Marazzi’s newest wood plank series in color body porcelain. The artisanal feel of hand-scraped, hand-oiled hardwood is authentically reproduced on a strong and durable porcelain body that withstands rigors – water, stains, freezing conditions – that are often the nemesis of real wood.” –Marazzi USA
The name alone will catch your eye: “Porcelain Wood.” Marazzi has developed a new type of plank that defies the effects of nature. You get all the beauty of wood but with the durability of stone. Talk about having your cake and eating it!
Janell Porter, of Interior Surface, says this new material is “beautiful and has the visually stunning aesthetics of wood, coupled with the durability of a porcelain stone. This is a breathtakingly beautiful product for any commercial space and is designer friendly. Architects and designers will love it!”
Marazzi uses 3-D digital print technique to permeate the surface of the tile. So you get the warm feel of real wood, while wide-plank sizes of 6 inches by 36 inches and 9 inches by 36 inches allow for minimal grout joints. The colors available for the stone “wood” tile are: Natural, Saddle, and Spice. Not only is this new Marazzi product beautiful and durable, it is responsible; it contains 21% recycled content. Congratulations to Interior Surface again on their fourth nomination by Starnet, this time for their work on the Western Missouri Medical Center project in Warrensburg, Missouri. “The creative use of tile throughout . . . has unified [Western Missouri Medical Center’s] rambling collection of buildings into one modern, warm, and welcoming facility.” (Starnet) See for yourself:
Congratulations to Interior Surface for one of four 2013 Starnet Design Award submissions for 2013. The third submission is the Smithville High School Performing Arts Center, Smithville, Smithville, Missouri.
According to Starnet, “Sophisticated Style Meets Traditional High School” was the goal for Smithville’s New Performing Art Center. Centiva’s Contour Series Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) was selected to highlight the sophistication of the lobby and hallway areas of this building. Green, the school color was chosen as the main accent throughout this addition. Designers also incorporated a wide variety of strong neutrals in order to emphasize a feeling of refined elegance. The main design challenge faced in this space was to add visual interest to the long hallways, which was achieved by adding curves to the LVT. A main focal point on the lobby walls was created by adding a band of beautiful Marazzi Glass Tile to the exposed brick, unifying the old and new spaces of the building. The auditorium features a non-traditional American Olean Tile as a defined wall below the fabric panels. This choice adds sophisticated ambiance to the space while providing a durable product requiring minimal maintenance. Luxurious high quality American Olean Tile was also used in the restrooms to provide ease of maintenance. The classic styling and elegant design concept has made this project a stunning success.
Congratulations to Interior Surface for one of four 2013 Starnet Design Award submissions for 2013. The first is for Garnett Elementary School, Garnett, Kansas. We’ll let the photos speak for themselves.
